Vicky Pattison Faces Backlash for Deepfake Sex Tape Stunt: Bold Activism or Misguided PR Move?

In a move that’s left critics fuming and fans questioning, Vicky Pattison, the once-rowdy Geordie Shore star, has set social media ablaze with a bold and deeply polarizing decision. Her upcoming documentary, Vicky Pattison: My Deepfake Sex Tape, dives headfirst into the disturbing world of synthetic porn and its devastating impact on victims. To promote it, Pattison didn’t just raise eyebrows—she raised the stakes.

By superimposing her face onto an actor’s body in a fabricated sex tape, Pattison aimed to illuminate the grim realities of deepfake abuse. The result? A tidal wave of backlash, from accusations of a tasteless PR stunt to criticisms from survivors who feel her approach trivializes their trauma. Yet, in the face of outrage, Vicky stands her ground, resolute in her belief that her controversial choice was a necessary one.

“The video itself has always been the part of the documentary I’ve wrestled with the most,” she confessed to The Sun. “I completely understand some people might be angry and upset about what we’ve done… but I hope they see the bigger picture.”

For Pattison, this wasn’t a flippant stunt but a calculated risk, one designed to force a conversation about an issue that’s as insidious as it is ignored. Deepfake porn, a tech-driven nightmare, is the latest evolution in the long history of women’s bodies being exploited for profit and humiliation. Meeting survivors of this abuse, Pattison says, only strengthened her resolve to do something impactful—even if it meant courting controversy.

Still, not everyone is buying it. Jodie, a survivor of deepfake abuse, has publicly condemned the documentary’s tactics, accusing it of being counterproductive and undermining the fight for legislation that prioritizes victims. In her view, Pattison’s tape risks sensationalizing a harrowing issue while inadvertently boosting traffic to the very sites profiting from this exploitation.

Pattison, however, counters that her approach was meticulously crafted to avoid such pitfalls. The deepfake, she insists, was created with full consent, using actors and AI technology to simulate the kind of video that often devastates real victims. For her, the goal was simple: expose the ease with which such content is created and the far-reaching consequences it leaves in its wake.

It’s a heavy gamble, and one that’s taken a toll. Pattison admits she couldn’t bring herself to ask her new husband, Ercan Ramadan, to sit beside her as she hit “post” on the video. “This was my decision alone,” she said, acknowledging the strain her activism has put on their fresh marriage.

The documentary, set to air on Channel 4 on January 28th, promises to be more than its provocative promo. It aims to spotlight survivor stories and demand stronger protections for women online. For Vicky, this is personal. “I wrestled with this decision for a long time,” she says, “but I believe it’s a conversation worth having—even if it makes people uncomfortable.”

Uncomfortable is putting it lightly, but then again, maybe that’s the point.
