It’s been 35 years since Meg Ryan faked an orgasm in a New York deli, sending Billy Crystal—and the entire romantic comedy genre—into the stratosphere. Now, the classic When Harry Met Sally moment is getting a modern-day revival, courtesy of Sydney Sweeney, the latest Hollywood bombshell anointed as the queen of rom-coms.
Sydney Sweeney: The New Face of Romantic Comedy?
Director Jake Szymanski knew he needed someone special to round out his Hellmann’s Super Bowl commercial, which reunites Ryan and Crystal at their old stomping grounds. “There was some talk early on about, ‘Who are we gonna get for the cameo role? Who’s gonna end the spot?’” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “And I kind of like that Sydney is emerging as this new rom-com star … so I like that it was kind of like a mini passing of the torch.”
The ad opens with Crystal smirking, “I can’t believe they let us back into this place,” to which Ryan playfully quips, “Nobody remembers that.” But when her turkey-on-rye sandwich underwhelms, a dollop of Hellmann’s mayo changes everything. Cue the infamous moans—only this time, Harry confirms, “This one’s real.” And just like that, the camera pans to Sydney Sweeney, who delivers the legendary closer: “I’ll have what she’s having.”

Sydney Sweeney’s Dream Rom-Com Co-Star? Paul Mescal.
For Sweeney, who recently proved her rom-com chops in Anyone But You, stepping into an iconic moment alongside legends was a surreal experience. “Honestly, it’s been such a dream,” she told Cosmopolitan. “Being able to be in this moment with them and especially recreating such an iconic moment…I don’t know what life is right now. It’s really, really cool.”
But Sweeney’s not stopping there. If Hollywood ever greenlights a When Harry Met Sally remake, she’s already got her leading man in mind: Gladiator II star Paul Mescal. “Oh my goodness. I just watched Gladiator II, so I’d love to work with Paul Mescal,” she gushed. “I think he’s amazing, and I’d love to see him in a really fun rom-com. I feel like we need him in a rom-com.”
With Sweeney taking up the torch and rom-coms experiencing a mini-renaissance, it looks like the genre isn’t just alive—it’s thriving. And with Hollywood’s latest “it girl” in the driver’s seat, the future of meet-cutes, grand gestures, and fake orgasms is looking pretty damn good.
